That is a very common question about MRSA. People want to know if MRSA is contagious and how long the contagious period is for MRSA. Expecting mothers also often wonder if MRSA is contagious for pregnant women and if MRSA is contagious to their child. The simple answers are yes, MRSA infections are contagious and yes, pregnant women can have MRSA infections. If you have more questions about how contagious MRSA is you should consult your doctor. MRSA, like many other staph infections, is found on a persons skin or in their nose. The spread of the MRSA infection is very easy because it transmits easily from skin to skin contact. A brush against someones arm, or even being around when someone with MRSA who is sneezing could potentially cause the spread of the disease. That's why MRSA in schools is becoming such a problem. They call MRSA a Superbug because of how incredibly easy it is for MRSA spread. Because MRSA is so contagious MRSA infections are more commonly to happen in hospitals and other similar places like nursing homes. Places like that have the contagion plus more people there are likely to be sick with MRSA to begin with. The spread of MRSA infection is easier because the people in these places already have weakened immune systems or are elderly. But, MRSA in recent years has started to become more dangerous, and MRSA has started showing up in places other than health care institutions. The MRSA staph infection can show up in people who have not been hospitalized or people who have not had any surgery within the past year. Even people without weakened immune systems have contracted MRSA. Around twelve percent of all MRSA infections are now community-based infections. It is also said that depending what strain of over 150 now you have determines if you ever get rid of it. There are some strains out there that once you have it you can never get rid of it. That makes you contagious for the entire time you have it. That is another why the MRSA is so serious. There is another version out that VRSA that is extremely rare, there is only a handful of people in the country that have it. Here is more information about MRSA and how contagious it is.

Name: Oneida Date: Tuesday, May 12 2009 How does MRSA get into the bloodstream if there is no outside sore or pimple? My mom has been diagnoised with MRSA. She does have a feeding tube and she had a pickline. The doctor ordered the pickline to be removed and cultured and the nurse removed it and then threw it away and did not have a culture done. We do not know how she got it unless it was on the pickline. Her hand has been swollen for a couple of days. She has been crying for a week and not talking. It's like she hurts everywhere. Does this cause her body to hurt? The infected person was at work almost a week with an open wound before it was diagnosed. The person was off work over the weekend and returned to work the following Tuesday (only off one day)and says the doctor says he is clear to return to work. Is it safe to say that we the other employees are not in danger of infection? My concern is I have an elderly mother at home recovering from pneumonia with a lower immune system and I fear carrying this to her. |

My husband injured his finger changing a tire, a wire from the tire went in like a splinter. He had to have emergency surgery to have it drained and the damaged flesh removed. The Orthapedic Dr said he got the results from the lab showed it was MRSA. Stuff like this is scary and you really don't know what to do. I wash my hands a lot and use germ-x. I figured they would put him in the hospital, but they didn't. I sure hope nobody gets it that he has been around.
